Servo Trimmer Tackles Hard-to-Finish Bottles - 09/03

KASS Automation Systems in Carrollton, Texas, has created an integrated three-station bottle-finishing system that reportedly can handle complex container shapes at record throughputs. Model DF400T-10M can deflash, trim, and ream 90 bottles/min, a rate about equal to today’s highest output extrusion blow molders. The first model was built to finish 300-oz, dual-neck, liquid detergent containers for a major U.S. brand.

The DT400T-10M uses 19 electric servo motors to ensure precise and accurate bottle positioning in the six-head trim station. High-powered blowers ensure removal of debris from containers.

KASS Automation Systems Inc., Moves to Larger Facility

KASS Automation Systems, located in the Dallas, TX, metroplex, and lead by industry veteran Alan Thatcher (formerly of MTM Systems) has moved to a larger facility, and expanded its operation to include an in-house machine shop specifically focused on customer tooling requirements.

The new facility will also allow for further expansion of KASS' parts department, which stocks parts for its own line of blowmolding automation equipment as well as a complete inventory of parts for MTM Systems machinery. CHICAGO (June 30, 2:20 p.m. EDT) -- Kass Corp. is ready to expand and will move into a new facility later this summer and actively seek new employees.

The blow molding automation company founded by Alan Thatcher in 2001 unveiled the DF400T-10M automated spin trimmer at NPE 2003 in Chicago. The trimmer has high-speed vertical deflashing, reaming and rotary trim with 19 servos and three stations capable of finishing up to 90 parts per minute, said Kris Thatcher during a June 25 interview.

Thatcher spent more than 20 years in the industry, with Machine Tool & Mold and MTM Systems before launching Kass. The firm now has seven employees. Its new, 6,000-square-foot building in Carrollton, Texas, is double the size of the existing plant.

Within Kass, Thatcher and the company can focus on specific trimming needs within blow molding, making it possible to respond more quickly to customers, Kris Thatcher said.

“I really feel like this show is going to double our business this year,” Kris Thatcher said. “We’re very excited.”

KASS Corporation & Lectro Engineering Reach Settlement

Per a settlement reached August, 2002 in the U.S. District Court of Oregon KASS Automation Systems and Lectro Engineering are both legally permitted to manufacture takeaways, spin trimmers, deflashers and other automation machinery for downline plastics automation.

Further, KASS is allowed to manufacture parts and provide service for new and existing MTM Systems machinery.
